Oporto is a city different from any that I have ever known.
Oporto nestles in the River Douro Valley, crawling up into the hills. By the river, the typical ‘rabelo’ boats descend, loaded with barrels of port wine which carry the name of the city to the four corners of the world. With a deep river bed and strong currents, the Douro ends up being conquered by successive bridges which are, each one of them, notable works of art.
Oporto is a city which knows how to be modern without losing its soul. Along with an historic Medieval centre, it sports some beautiful Baroque churches, animated Eighteenth Century streets and bold buildings of contemporary architecture. And, above all, it houses a population proud of its legacy who know, almost uniquely, how to receive those who visit with open arms.
