4050-546 Porto
To get to know Oporto’s fundamentals, we would like to propose you a two day programme:
Begin with the Serra do Pilar, from where you will be able to see the best view of the River Douro and the Historic Centre of Oporto. Walk down to the Port Wine Cellars, where the precious nectar is kept. Cross the lower carriageway of the magnificent Luis I Bridge (Ponte Luis I) and cast an eye over the Church of St. Francisco (Igreja de Sao Francisco) and the neighbouring Stock Exchange (Palacio da Bolsa). Eat lunch in one of the typical restaurants on the Ribeira Quay (Cais da Ribeira). Take the Funicular dos Guindais and miss neither the majestic Cathedral of Oporto nor the impressive tiles of Sao Bento Station. Continue to the Church of the Clerics (Igreja dos Clerigos) and don’t forget to go up the tower. Visit the gorgeous Lello Bookshop and cross the Praça dos Leoes (Lion Square) to admire the twin churches of Carmelitas and Carmo. Very near, there are two museums that merit your attention: the Antiga Cadeira da Relaçao and the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis . Finish your day looking at the sunset in the romantic Jardins do Palacio de Cristal...the romantic Gardens of the Palace of Glass.
On the second day, let’s begin at another spot with privileged views, the Miradouro das Fontainhas...the Fontainhas Viewing point. Let’s continue in the direction of the National Theatre of S. Joao. Strolling through the city’s commercial roads, don’t miss the typical market, Mercado do Bolhao. Take the underground (Metro do Porto) and get out at the Boavista Roundabout (Rotunda da Boavista), to visit the House of Music ( Casa da Musica). As it will already be time for lunch, choose the Bom Sucesso Market, where you will find ample and varied gastronomic delights. In the afternoon, visit the Serralves Foundation, walk through the City Park and finish in the Foz do Douro, with the Atlantic at your feet.
